Steve Grasselli holding Shaker Boxes Quote by Steve Grasselli

I am a one man shop in Syracuse New York.  My woodworking started at The Baldwinsville Boatyard, we built boats from 30 to 100 feet in length.  The boatyard had a wood shop, I had a new apartment and nothing to put in it.  With the help of some very talented and helpful coworkers I made my first simple pieces.

After a few other jobs I landed at L and JG Stickley, Manlius New York in 1990.  At Stickley I learned to make high quality furniture with a high attention to fine detail, which is central to Shaker box making.

Because of my close relationship to many Shaker museums I have been able to hold in my hands hundreds of original Shaker made boxes.  I have seen all of the details that were important to the old Shakers and have incorporated them in to my work.

I think it is vital to a reproduction maker to have an intimate knowledge of original work so as to avoid any deviation from the best form.  I stay faithful to what the Shakers wanted in a box.
